Home: It's as much a feeling as a place...

Home is what we celebrate here on Our Mountains. The things that make up our homes: our families, our traditions and our culture are special to each and every one of us. And here, in the heart of Appalachia, we cherish these things above all else. This deep- rooted love of where we come from combined with breathtaking natural beauty makes Central Appalachia one of the most special places on Earth. And Our Mountains was created with the sole purpose of showcasing all of the amazing stories, songs and foods found in this region.

During the Summer of 2013, Rhonda, Joel and Dean began production on what would become Our Mountains. Their pilot episode featured music from the Gospel group Good Ground that was distinctly Appalachian, Rhonda preparing the traditional southern dish shucky beans, a look at Frontier Nursing University, an organization that has been active in Eastern Kentucky for almost 100 years, and Rhonda singing a Jean Ritchie song about a mine disaster recorded at the Hurricane Mine Memorial, the site of an explosion in the late 1970’s where 38 men lost their lives.

Since then, Our Mountains has broadcast dozens of episodes, featuring musicians from across the region. We have shared stories both inspiring and informative with the goal of always focusing on the positive aspects of our region. Rhonda has shared recipes from Col. Harlan Sanders to her Aunt Georgie’s Meatloaf and many of her own creations. Dean has brought students from the Kentucky School of Bluegrass and Traditional Music to perform, along with singing a few himself. Our Mountains the show, just like the mountains we cover, is just beginning to reach our potential. With so many great stories and songs and recipes out there, we’ve only just begun!
